ANIS Helmi and Lim Eng Seng will make their respective debuts as fellow professionals in next month’s Maybank Malaysian Open after finishing among the top five in the national qualifying tournament at Saujana Golf and Country Club yesterday.
Anis carded a two-day total of 145 to finish two strokes behind winner and seasoned pro R. Nachimuthu.
Nachimuthu carded a one-over 73 yesterday for a 143 total.
The other three spots went to Eng Seng, P. Gunasegaran and P. Paramaswaran, who were all tied for third on 148.
After failing to make a mark in last week’s Asian Tour Qualifying School in Bangkok, Anis was delighted to secure a starting place in the Malaysian Open.
“I played in the 2006 Malaysian Open but only as an amateur. I had the support of my family during the Asian Tour Qualifying School but I did not do well,” said Anis, who was in the national team for three years before deciding to turn pro in 2007, yesterday.
“Now my family is delighted with my achievement.”
Anis, 23, made the cut of three Asian Tour competitions — the Cambodian Open, Iskandar Johor Open and Seri Selangor Masters — last year.
Also delighted to earn a place in the Malaysian Open for the first time as a pro is Eng Seng, who is the younger brother of former Sea Games winner Lim Ai Lian.
“I competed in the event as an amateur from 2002-2005 but I failed to make it after that,” said the 27-year-old Eng Seng.
Sixteen spots have been allocated for Malaysian pros in this year’s event.
