In the period of 14 days, National Election Committee (NEC) set for all political parties to submit candidate lists. Only 12 of 57registered parties have submitted their candidate list to compete in July’s national election before Monday’s deadline.

NEC already approved only three parties, including Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Hang Dara Democratic Movement party and Norodom Ranariddh party.

NEC is inspecting eight parties which include SRP, Funcipec, the Human Rights party, the Just Society party, the Khmer Republican party, the Khmer Democratic party, the Anti-poverty party, and the League for Democratic party.

The Khmer United People party (KUPP) has been denied by NEC because of failing to fielding minimum number of Candidates necessary to run a countrywide campaign.

Most of parties complained that letters from commune chiefs authorizing their candidates hadn’t been cross-checked with voter list from last year’s commune election. NEC said.

The number of registered political parties for July 2008 National Election is decreasing, in comparison with the 200e election, 23 parties, and the 1998 election, 39 parties. The 123 seats remains the same 2003 national election.
